- LAUNCHPAD FOR NDE'S EXPORTS INTO AFRICA

Alpheus-Kgampe--2It all started for NDE in Johannesburg in 1945, with a small company supplying dairy process equipment after WWII and adding a stainless steel division a few years later.

Today, NDE is one of the leading suppliers of corrosion resistant materials in Southern Africa and into Africa, with three Gauteng outlets (Johannesburg, Germiston and Pretoria) and three elsewhere in South Africa (Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth), with an agent in Nelspruit.

NDE Johannesburg, like all NDE branches, is structured to make it easy for customers to access the wide range of corrosion resistant products in stock and available from NDE's trusted network.

"Over the years we have mastered a product range to suit the needs of our customers, backed by many years of experience and technical expertise," says Hardy Esterhuizen, manager of NDE's Johannesburg branch.

"The key element of the many customer service benefits which we offer is that we have structured the business to make it easy to deal with NDE," says Hardy.

"Our customers range from the small entrepreneur with a bakkie who knows what he wants, buys off the shelf, drives in to collect and wants a fast turnaround so that he can get back on site, to large companies who place an order for delivery the same day, to project houses and huge process plants planning new developments requiring complicated products and logistics, often with fabrication and often with the complexities of exporting into Africa," he says.

"We are here to do business and serve the customer – small, medium and large – so, for instance, we are geared to deliver small orders as well as large ones," he says.

Customers include clients in Building and Construction, Petrochemical, Mining, Engineering, Fabrication, Automotive, Food & Beverage and Catering.

"We understand the product, we continually strive to understand our customers' needs, we understand the importance of simplified purchase procedures (without red tape) and we operate with a set of equitable, honest values which people can relate to," says Hardy.

With Gauteng being South Africa's economic hub, NDE's growth has led to the establishment of branches in other centres, Germiston and Pretoria.

"Rather than find larger premises in Johannesburg, we decided to take our product range and service to our customers, opening Germiston in 2010 and Pretoria in 2012," he says.

Johannesburg branch's long-serving experienced professionals are structured into teams dedicated to delivering on Product, Sales, Projects and Exports. There is also a consulting team providing Technical Information and actively engaging with customers to assist in selecting appropriate products to suit specific corrosion resistant conditions and requirements.

"In pursuing tailor-made solutions for our clients' corrosion issues, our technical consulting team has pioneered the introduction of newer grades of stainless steel fit for purpose which has also brought significant cost-savings to customers as well as industry recognition for NDE!" says Hardy.

A 'first' for the industry was NDE's introduction of 2m wide plate, followed by their introduction of lean duplexes into South Africa – both have become widely used.

NDE translates this new knowledge of different applications into educating the marketplace through various industry-wide lectures as well as dedicated workshops for customers and industry associations.
