DID YOU KNOW – ABOUT STAINLESS STEEL

didyouknow

  • Stainless steel must have a minimum of 12% chromium to be called “Stainless”
  • In air a very thin chrome oxide film forms on the surface of the alloy, approximately 5 microns thick
  • This film is a ceramic, which provides good corrosion resistance
  • In industrial environments this film can be penetrated through corrosion or mechanical damage
  • Providing there is oxygen present, the oxide film will reform if damaged
  • The chrome makes the steel relatively brittle, especially after welding
